FIRST ELEVEN MUSIC COMPETITION 2008: THE WINNERS

Winning soloist: Mike Sharp

Age 15 and a pupil at Uppingham, acoustic guitarist Mike Sharp impressed our judge, Steve Winwood, with his “inventive song writing and competitive performance”. Mike first picked up the guitar when a football injury meant his days on the pitch were over, and has never looked back. Now he has won an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Plus Vintage Sunburst guitar to launch him on his way to a career in music.

Winning band: The Saxburys

In their last year of 6th form at Taunton School in Somerset, Ryan (vocals), Ali P (guitar), Nathan (drums) and Theo (Bass guitar, synth) – aka the Saxburys - were chosen by Steve Winwood for “their energy and musicianship”. A&R men are already knocking at their door, so we thought the best prize for the boys would be 2 days’ free recording with all the extras at the Fortress Music Studios in London. As to the must-have accessories of fans, entourage and groupies, we’re confident the Saxburys will have no problem finding their own.

Best shortlisted soloist: Charlie Millar

Acoustic guitarist Charlie, 18 and in his final year at Bedales, has been playing the guitar since he was 13 and hopes to study contemporary music at Goldsmiths or Leeds. His wonderful technique and audible love for the guitar shine through on every track, and merit a special mention from Steve Winwood and the First Eleven team.
